In Caumont-sur-Durance, excavations of a XNUMXth-century Roman villa have uncovered remarkable remains. Today, they are showcased in a XNUMX m² garden designed in accordance with Roman horticultural principles.
When visiting Caumont, the Roman garden is a must-see. This public and free-access site invites you to enjoy remarkable ancient remains in a stunning setting.

The most significant discovery from the excavations is an ornamental pond, XNUMX meters long, now restored and preserved. It is decorated with XNUMX XNUMX multicolored clay tiles arranged in opus spicatum (herringbone pattern). This unique archaeological feature is considered the most remarkable of its kind since Pompeii.

To highlight this exceptional heritage, eight thematic gardens have been created, each honoring a mythological figure from antiquity. They evoke the probable appearance of the site during Roman times.
The Roman garden was recognized by the Landscape Awards in XNUMX, receiving honors for its outstanding integration into the archaeological site, its promotion of the discoveries, and its educational presentation.
Very pretty garden to spend some quality time. Well planted. Back to the past!'
