Let's go and meet the emblem of Rochefort-du-Gard, the Castelas, which dominates the surrounding area. This parish church dedicated to Saint-Bardulphe is one of the emblematic monuments of the Grand Avignon, listed in the inventory of historical monuments.
The history of Castelas has been eventful. Although this church already existed in the 200th century, it was partially destroyed in the XNUMXth century during the Wars of Religion, to be rebuilt in the XNUMXth century on the orders of Richelieu. It was finally abandoned for the Saint-Bardulphe church (lower down in the village), and deteriorated until becoming a hayloft and then a water tower. It was in the XNUMXs that it regained its color, becoming a meeting and performance hall, then being listed in the inventory of historical monuments and being restored.

To observe this magnificent Romanesque-style church, its vaulted choir, its frescoes and its bell tower, we advise you to participate in the commented tours, which take place every second Saturday of the month, from June to September.
