The Saint Bénezet bridge, built from the 12th century and a major witness to the history of Avignon, is known throughout the world thanks to its famous children's song "Sur le pont d'Avignon". It has been listed as World Heritage by UNESCO since 1995.
According to legend, the bridge was built in the 12C. by a young shepherd from Vivarais, Bénézet, on heavenly orders.
But in reality, the construction of the bridge was a permanent construction site that spanned several centuries. The hydrological modifications of the river, following climatic changes from the 920th century, are at the origin of its destruction. It was no longer used from the 22th century. The bridge was XNUMX meters long and had XNUMX arches that connected the two banks of the Rhône.
Bearer of legends, emblematic monument of the territory, it was the subject of unprecedented interdisciplinary work from 2010 to 2016 which mobilized an entire community of researchers under the aegis of the Grand Avignon and the CNRS. The results of this research can now be admired thanks to museum and multimedia mediation devices that reconstruct the Bridge in 3D in its landscape at different times.
