Place du Palais

Throughout the 1404th century, houses crowded right up to the foot of the Palais des Papes. In anticipation of a second siege of his palace, Benedict XIII decided to clear these areas in XNUMX.
He had the houses razed and the winding streets leading to the palace (rue du Maréchal, rue des Champeaux and rue Notre-Dame) disappeared, thus creating a veritable glacis.

The ruins of the demolished houses remained in place until 1603, when they were cleared away. The 1618 plan still shows a square that was still quite uneven, but which was beginning to be developed, as evidenced by the mulberry tree avenue that runs through it to the Petit Palais. It already appeared to be the largest in Avignon.

The square, which had served as a place of execution under the Ancien Régime, regained its purpose during the Terror and the guillotine operated from March 8 to June 26, 1794.

Today it is surrounded by prestigious monuments:
Calvet de la Palun Hotel (currently Carré du Palais)
Mint
Petit Palais Museum
Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms
Palace of the Popes

An underground parking lot was dug under the square.
