Palais des Papes

The monumental residence of the sovereign pontiffs, symbol of the influence of the Church on the Christian West of the XNUMXth century, constitutes the most important Gothic palace in the world!
The Palais des Papes is one of the 10 most visited monuments in France.

Residence of the sovereign pontiffs of the 15th century, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it constitutes the largest Gothic palace in the world (000 m2 of floor space, equivalent to the volume of 4 Gothic cathedrals).
It presents the visitor with more than twenty places, in particular the private apartments of the Pope and their fabulous decorations of frescoes executed by the Italian artist Matteo Giovannetti.

THE HISTOPAD: an immersive digital tour to go back in time and see the invisible!
With the Histopad (digital tablet), cross the doors of time and relive the splendor of the papal court in the 9th century in multimedia immersion. Thanks to augmented reality you will be able to visualize a large part of the rooms of the Palais des Papes as they might have been in the XNUMXth century. The Histopad allows you to take a virtual tour of XNUMX main rooms of the palace which have been re-imagined using augmented reality in their XNUMXth century decor.

THE PALACE GARDENS
Recently restored, they constitute a new attraction for the visitor, opening up a space for relaxation and allowing a better understanding of the whole of the Palace of the Popes, an exceptional Historic Monument listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Jardin du Pape and the Jardin du Palais thus join the Orchard Urbain V, inaugurated on September 14, 2018, and freely accessible to the public, to complete the triptych of the Gardens of the Palais des Papes.
This redevelopment is structured in two areas: the Jardin du Palais (or Jardin Benoît XII, 1250 m2) and the Jardin du Pape (662 m2).
The XNUMXth century hydraulic network was chosen as the structuring element of the design of the Garden of the Palace, delimiting the large rectangles where Mediterranean plant species attested in the XNUMXth century are planted in these pontifical gardens.
The Pope's Garden is an intimate garden, which had direct access from the Pope's apartments. The redevelopment gives it back its precious character with the re-creation of the griffin fountain as well as the flowery meadow that surrounded it. The famous and imposing Roma building, of which only a trace remains, has been reconstructed in the form of a monumental pergola which will eventually be entirely covered with plants.
A restoration undertaken by the City of Avignon and Avignon Tourisme with the assistance of the State, the DRAC, the Southern Region, the Crédit Agricole Foundation and the L'Occitane Foundation.
It is possible to visit the gardens of the Palace alone, or to combine their visit with that of the Pont d'Avignon or the Palace of the Popes.
Free for Avignon residents every day of the year upon reservation and presentation of proof of address.
Closed to visitors 1 hour before the monument closes.
