Musée Pierre-de-Luxembourg

Housed in a beautiful 17th-century mansion, the Pierre-de-Luxembourg Museum contains masterpieces of French art, including a Gothic ivory Virgin and the altarpiece of the "Coronation of the Virgin" painted by Enguerrand Quarton in the 15th century.
Completely remodeled in the 17th century, the private mansion that has housed the collections since 1986 is an urban palace known as a "livrée," built in the 14th century for high-ranking Church dignitaries. The building now bears the name of Cardinal Pierre de Luxembourg, beatified, who, according to tradition, died there in 1387 at the age of 17. The collections it houses originate from the religious institutions of Villeneuve lez AvignonThese works, notably from the Abbey of Saint-André and the Charterhouse of Val de Bénédiction, bear witness to the flourishing past of the cardinal's city. Among them are two major pieces: a Virgin carved from an elephant tusk and dated to the 1310s, and a painting on wood entitled "The Coronation of the Virgin," painted between April 1453 and September 1454. The rest of the collections are no less of exceptional quality. Commissioned by the Carthusian monks from the most celebrated artists of their time, they date from the 16th and 17th centuries and include works by Simon de Châlons, Philippe de Champaigne, Nicolas Mignard, and Reynaud Levieux.
