Le Grenier à sel

Opened in 2018 in one of the oldest buildings in the city, the Grenier à sel offers a multidisciplinary program in the field of visual and performing arts, at the intersection of art, science and technology.
Conceived as a space of cultural hybridization and effervescence, the Grenier à sel explores new perimeters of creation, those based on the strong permeability between art, science and technologies. The Grenier à sel encourages new modalities of collaboration between artists, researchers and economic actors, thus allowing the production of original works that shed light on our understanding of the current world and its changes.
Punctuated by exhibitions, performances, residencies, shows, workshops and meetings, the Grenier à sel program offers artists, partners and audiences a platform for emotion and reflection, to invent and dream of the world of tomorrow.
This former salt granary of the city, whose origins date back to the 1758th century, is located in the heart of Avignon, in the immediate vicinity of the Palais des Papes. Demolished several times, it was rebuilt in 1984 by the architect Jean-Ange Brun and classified as a historical monument in 1989, before being rehabilitated by the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte in XNUMX. Facing the Rhône with its beautiful Louis XV façade, it recalls by its architecture and its location the importance of salt in the society of the Ancien Régime.
