La Chartreuse – Centre national des écritures du spectacle

Nestled in the heart of the city, the Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction is a jewel of Gothic architecture that stretches over nearly 2 hectares. Today, it is a Cultural Center that offers a year-round program.

Immerse yourself in 700 years of history by discovering the Chartreuse du Val-de-Bénédiction.

Nestled in the medieval city of Villeneuve lez AvignonIt offers shaded cloisters that invite strolling and contemplation. Spanning over 2 hectares, this monastery reveals 14th-century masterpieces. The chapel adorned with frescoes by Matteo Giovanetti and the monumental tomb of Pope Innocent VI testify to its prestige.

Its foundation by Pope Innocent VI in the 14th century sealed the fate of this monastery, which stands out as an exception within the Carthusian order. The Revolution brought an end to its religious vocation, and the Charterhouse then became a district of Villeneuve lez Avignonwhere nearly 300 families settled until the 20th century. The State subsequently launched an ambitious restoration program. In 1973, the Chartreuse became a hub of creativity where heritage and performing arts converge, before becoming the National Center for Performing Arts Writing.

Today, the Chartreuse du Val-de-Bénédiction is a vibrant place offering a cultural program throughout the year.
