The Saint Joseph Chapel was built in 1729 on the initiative of Pierre Palejay, a notable from Rochefort.
The keystone represents a small shield engraved with the letters PP placed in saltire on a small cross surrounded by the four numbers forming 1734, the date on which it was blessed.
A central place in the life of Rochefort residents, it was the Town Hall until 1825. Transformed, it then housed the town hall on the first floor, the boys' school, and accommodation for the teacher on the ground floor. Today, it houses the Maison des Arts, an exhibition space.
