Hôtel de Ville

The Town Hall, located on the Place de l'Horloge, was built in the 19th century.
It was in 1447 that the consuls of Avignon bought the Gothic building of the old livery of Albano from the Benedictines of Saint-Laurent to make it the common house and transform the tower of this livery into a belfry.
But it wasn't until the 19th century that the city council decided to equip the city with a proper town hall. It was the architect Joseph-Auguste Joffroy who drew up the plans for the current town hall. To enhance the façade, which lacked relief, the architect Feuchères added a balcony supported by Corinthian columns and increased the number of columns inside the peristyle.
This project was then at the heart of a controversy between the municipality and Esprit Requien, who, supported by Prosper Mérimée, was one of the great defenders of local heritage. The Jacquemart tower was preserved. It is now restored.
