Eglise Notre-Dame du Bon Repos

The Notre-Dame de Bon Repos church is located in Montfavet in the commune of Avignon in Vaucluse.

It is part of the diocese of Avignon and has been listed as a Historic Monument of France since July 20, 1908.
Cardinal Bertrand de Montfavès bought the fief of Montfavet in 1341, and from that date named it "Notre-Dame de Bon Repos". He wanted to found a monastery there, and where he wished to be buried. Work began in 1343, shortly after the cardinal's death, and lasted four years.

The monastery itself took the name of its founder, who died in 1343 without having been able to see the work completed by the masons Bertrand and Pierre Folcoaud of Avignon. The cardinal was buried under a slab, in front of the altar itself, in 1343 and, although this tomb has now disappeared, there still remains in a nearby chapel that of Pierre de Cohorn, an exiled Swedish nobleman whose funerary inscription (1486) tells the unusual odyssey.

The Montfavet convent was initially dependent on the Abbey of Saint-Ruf, before being transformed into a benefice at the beginning of the 1452th century and then being united with the Work of the Pont d'Avignon (1613), to finally welcome, in 1759, some Recollect monks. In XNUMX, these were replaced by Capuchins.
