Chapelle Saint Symphorien

The Saint Symphorien Chapel, a Provençal Romanesque building from the 12th century at its peak, lost its function as a parish church in the 14th century because its remote location made it dangerous to visit due to the prevailing insecurity at the time.
Visit possible only during European Heritage Days.

This chapel was a 4th-century priory that the popes united with the Bonpas charterhouse. It is a Romanesque church of the purest style. Witness to the apogee of Povençal art, it consists of a single nave with XNUMX bays, vaulted in a pointed barrel, opening onto an apse which is semi-domed on the inside, pentagonal on the outside. The columns of the apse are finely worked with double rows of acanthus leaves, according to a model inspired by antiquity. There is also a small arcade bell tower and under the chapel, a crypt dug into the rock.
