Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs

A marvel of Baroque art, the Chapel of the Black Penitents comes from the only brotherhood to have survived after the Revolution in Avignon, along with that of the Grey Penitents.

The Brotherhood of the Black Penitents of Mercy was founded in 1586 by some Italians from Avignon in the former chapel of the priory or hospital of Notre-Dame de Fenouillet dating from the 13th century to care for prisoners, condemned prisoners, and those known as the poor insane. Remodeled at the beginning of the 16th century, its current appearance dates from the restoration of the years 1739-1740.

No visits during religious ceremonies or public holidays.
