Written heritage, historical sources, administrative documents, trial minutes, notarial registers... The department's "papers" are collected, listed, preserved and made available to the public.
Intended to bring together "all the titles and papers acquired during the Revolution" to make them accessible to citizens, from 1796, public repositories were created in the departmental capitals. Entrusted to the General Councils, they gathered the documents of the institutions abolished in 1790 as well as those of the new administrations. This historical documentary and cultural center preserves in a part of the Palais des Papes some twenty linear kilometers of documents classified in regulatory series. The oldest document dates back to the year 898.
Access to the archives is free for both those conducting research and visitors to the temporary exhibitions on display in the lobby. The departmental archives also host conferences and tours for associations.
