In Avignon, some places tell the story in a different way. This is the case with... Pommer BathsA public bathhouse dating back to the Belle Époque, frozen in time and now transformed into a museum. A site unique in France, classified as a historical monument, where you literally immerse yourself in the daily life of Avignon residents between 1891 and 1972.
A timeless place in the heart of Avignon

From the moment you enter, you understand that the Pommer Baths are unlike any other museum. The period tiles, the rows of cabins, the light scent of old wood: everything is there, intact, as if the last users had just left the premises.
Created by Auguste PommerThe establishment operated for nearly a century. In an era when running water was not a given, it was an essential place not only for washing, but also for meeting and socializing. The Pommer Baths represented hygiene but also the lifeblood of the neighborhood.
An immersive journey through the history of hygiene
The guided tour (highly recommended) takes us behind the scenes of a veritable small 19th-century “spa complex”:

Bathing cabins: a journey into the Belle Époque
Lined up under the large glass roof, the cabins have remained in their original state: hand-painted numbers, wooden doors, original handles. Some were dedicated to steam baths or sulfur baths, highly prized for their therapeutic properties.
Technical equipment: boilers, pumps and heating systems
Where many museums display objects, here everything has remained in place. You discover the large vats, the copper pipes, the boilers that once supplied the baths. A true immersion in the mechanics of the era.

The life of the Pommer family, preserved as if time had stood still
What makes the visit truly touching is the discovery of the Pommer family's apartmentIt has remained virtually unchanged. Kitchen, bedroom, dining room: you feel like you're stepping into their home. This place tells the story of hygiene as much as it does the story of an Avignon dynasty that ran these baths for four generations.

The roof, the tanks and the garden: a unique architectural ensemble
The tour continues on the rooftops, where enormous tanks once stored cold water. Below, the garden and veranda complete this already exceptional place. The Pommer Baths form a veritable microcosm, a rare ensemble that few cities have preserved.
Free, authentic and exciting: a must-see in the city
This small, free museum is a true heritage gem. No excessive staging, no artifice: the strength of the place lies in its authenticity. Passionate guides help visitors understand the evolution of hygiene practices, as well as the social upheavals from the 19th to the 20th century.
An ideal visit for families, friends or solo travelers, to discover Avignon from a completely different perspective!
