The Charterhouse of Villeneuve lez Avignon is much more than just a relic of the past. This iconic site, whose origins date back to the 14th century, has reinvented itself over the centuries to become a true cultural and artistic center, a vibrant and dynamic space where heritage, creativity, and conviviality meet.
A rich and varied heritage
Built by Pope Innocent VI, the Charterhouse has survived the ages, marked by transformations and expansions which have made it theone of the largest charterhouses of Europe. Today, this exceptional architectural ensemble extends over nearly two hectares and welcomes thousands of visitors each year. The former monastic spaces, perfectly restored, now serve as a setting for a multitude of cultural and artistic activities.

A center for contemporary creation

In 1973 the Chartreuse became the first model of Cultural meeting center (CCR), then National Center for Performing Arts Writing (CNES) in 1991. This ambitious transformation, initiated by Jacques Duhamel, has made it possible to preserve this heritage while revitalizing it. The monks' former cells have been redeveloped to accommodate artists in residence, thus creating a true laboratory of contemporary creation. Every year, nearly 300 artists, authors and entertainment professionals come to work, exchange and create there, making the Chartreuse a place of artistic bubbling.
A rich cultural program
The Chartreuse offers a rich cultural program throughout the year, combining theater, visual arts, architecture and biodiversity. Events such as “Architecture in celebration” invite the public to discover the site from a different angle, by participating in workshops, shows and debates on contemporary architecture and the ecological transition. The “Theatrical Publishing Days” celebrate dramatic literature with readings, meetings, and round tables. These events, open to all, bring the public closer to the world of artistic creation and innovation.

A place to meet and share
