Cycling weekend in the Grand Avignon

Some information before setting off on your (two) freewheel(s)

Before I begin my cycling adventure, I'd like to share some key information with you. You should know that in France, two cycle routes allow you to take a step in the Grand Avignon. La ViaRhôna (EV17), which connects Switzerland to the Mediterranean over 815 kilometers and the Mediterranean by bike (EV8), connecting Italy to Spain. These two cycle routes are ideal for those who enjoy cycling trips.

If you're traveling with your family, Grand Avignon has more than one thing to offer to satisfy both young and old. The Tourist Office offers around tenvaried cycling routes. Suffice to say that this is the perfect opportunity to discover the region at your own pace and to keep an eye out for the colorful landscapes of ProvenceIt's also the perfect fun activity for children to enjoy some greenery.

Roquemaure – Villeneuve Lez Avignon

My 100% nature weekend by bike on the Chartreux cycle route

  • Departure: Roquemaure
  • Distance: 36 kilometers round trip
  • Level: accessible to all

For this first stage of my cycling weekend in Grand Avignon, I decided to venture onto the Chartreux cycle routeWithout further ado, I take my bike out of the garage and set off at a leisurely pace from Roquemaure. The kilometers fly by and I savor my ride through the vineyards, scrubland, and orchards, while a feeling of freedom washes over me. Cardio-wise, I find it pretty manageable (and I'm not a great athlete)!

This alternative route to the ViaRhôna takes me along the right bank of the Rhône. I then have plenty of time to explore the banks of the Rhône, from which I enjoy an incredible view of the castle of Hers located Châteauneuf-du-Pape. I also have the right to a beautiful green setting between agricultural plain and river, before reaching the charming town of Villeneuve lez AvignonI jump at the chance to treat myself to a well-deserved cultural break with the discovery of emblematic monuments like the Fort and the gardens of theSaint-André Abbey, but also the Chartreuse. I loved it!

Then, it is time to take the route in reverse to return to RoquemaureWithout wasting any time, I grab my pedals and off we go again. Just like on the way there, I never tire of contemplating vineyards and orchards as far as the eye can see. For this route, count on about 36 kilometers in total, 18 kilometers there and 18 kilometers back. It took me a little less than an hour and a half to reach Villeneuve lez Avignon from Roquemaure, not including breaks. I recommend planning at least an afternoon for this route, or even a day to take your time and cycle at your own pace.

My favorite ❤️

Mon gourmet stopover in the town of Sauveterre, where I was able to fill my bike bags with fishing, apricots and melons at Clos Méjean.

A little extra for the warm welcome from Florence and Hervé!

Saze – Rochefort-du-Gard

My tangy weekend cycling in the Signargues vineyards

  • Departure: Saze
  • Distance: 22 kilometers loop
  • Level: accessible to experienced cycle tourists

I continue my cycling weekend Grand Avignon with a challenging stage in the heart of the Côtes du Rhône. Departing from Saze, I begin my stroll along the Signargues vineyard. I have barely started pedaling and I am already charmed by theProvençal atmosphere of Saze. Little by little, I sink into the middle of the sun-drenched vineyards. On my way, I pass a few cyclists, but the atmosphere remains peaceful and invigorating. I confirm!

Who says bike ride in the vineyard also says tasting. Here, the wineries are numerous so it's very easy to find a good cellar and enjoy an explosion of flavors. During the tasting, the winemaker explains to me that the particularity of Signargues wines comes from the plateau of rolled pebbles which gives a powerful red, with delicate tannins. If you are a lover of good wine, you will love this tasting!

After this moment rich in flavors, it is (already) time to get back on the road. I then continue the journey towards Rochefort-du-Gard. I take the opportunity to visit this village renowned for its bucolic landscapes. Between olive trees and vineyards as far as the eye can see, I must say that I am not disappointed. I can only recommend this route of 22 kilometers in total. Plan half a day to fully enjoy all the curiosities and encounters that will punctuate your itinerary.

The gourmet advice

In Saze, don't forget to park your bike under the arbor of Timelo Dolce Vita to taste the pizzas of Mélodie, French Pizza Champion 2024!

My favorite: The plane tree avenue

Typical of here, this alley plunged me into theProvençal atmosphere upon my arrival in the charming village of Saze and the views of the majestic Mont Ventoux.

Heritage and aviation in Pujaut

My cultural weekend by bike in Provence

  • Departure: Pujaut market square
  • Level: accessible to intermediate levels
  • Distance: 11 kilometers loop

After having worked my calves well, I decide to do a stopover at Pujaut for a slow bike ride: a bike ride, between Heritage and AviationThe starting gun is fired from the market square, in the heart of the village. Between plane trees, pétanque courts and a large terrace: No doubt, I am in Provence! But there is no time to sit in the sun, we have to pedal first. To do this, head to thevillage airfield, a true kingdom of air sports. After touring the field, I enjoy the spectacle unfolding above my head. Gliders and parachutes have invaded the sky and are delighting in the company of the birds. I immortalize this moment with a nice photo before getting back in the saddle!

Pujaut view

To work on my cardio a little, I set off to attack the castle hillThe climb is a struggle, but I still manage to get to the top. I am greeted by the monument to the Virgin, Notre-Dame du Château, which I salute, before enjoying the panorama over the plain. Then comes my favorite moment: the descent of the hill and the return to the market square. Yes, after the effort comes the comfort, so I don't skimp on the Provencal specialtiesApricot, Cavaillon melon and Sault nougat… I’m having a blast!

My favorite: My session in a freefall simulator

Getting started was a bit of a challenge because the sensations are surprising. But once you find the right posture, the experience is magical. A must-try!

Roquemaure:

My day of discovery on the Côte du Rhône

  • Departure: Roquemaure
  • Distance: 22 kilometers loop
  • Level: accessible to experienced cycle tourists

To end my cycling getaway in style in the Grand Avignon, I choose to explore Roquemaure, true cradle of Côtes du Rhône. It is also here that the controlled designation of origin was organized from the 18th century. Starting from the city, I venture on this 22-kilometer loop through the vines and along the banks of the Rhône for an discovery bike day on the Côte du Rhône !

As I walk along, I enjoy the tangy landscapes before venturing to the heights of Sauveterre. I then continue to cycle to the Truel district, a small, timeless setting with its horses and pastures. Without forgetting the hamlet of Four and its pretty orchards which border the agricultural plain of Roquemaure. I can only recommend this route!

My favorite: Miémart Island

Exceptional natural space classified Natura 2000. I had a picnic there by the water and the ducks didn't leave a crumb!
