Description

Built from 1355, during the reign of Pope Innocent VI (1352-1362), the ramparts of Avignon are among the best preserved in France and among the largest, with a development of more than 4,5 km. In 1995, they were classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This long wall crowned with merlons and defended by a succession of towers, all open "at the throat", that is to say towards the interior, was built in Burdigolian molasse, a soft limestone, known as "stone of the south", abundant throughout the region. Originally, it had 7 gates, the number of which multiplied over the centuries. Today, there are 14. From 1860, the restoration of the ramparts was entrusted to Viollet-le-Duc.

Distance: 4.3 km
Duration: Approximately 45 min (not including stops)
Difficulty: Very easy, flat. Part of the route is shared (meeting area inside the ramparts).

Possibility of crossing at the pier to take the river shuttle and reach Barthelasse Island.
