La balade des papes

The rampart stairs and the Sainte Anne stairs, from the Rocher des Doms to the Cour de la Mantenance, have many steps.

Between breathtaking panoramas, the discovery of treasures classified as UNESCO World Heritage sites, more confidential places and strolls in picturesque neighborhoods: enjoy an urban stroll for lovers of authentic discoveries!

Starting from the Place du Palais des Papes, the walk invites us to progress to the Jardins des Doms which overlook the city, from where we can enjoy an exceptional 360° view over the rooftops of the city of the popes, Mont Ventoux, the Rhône and Fort Saint André, on the Villeneuve-lez-Avignon side.
PLEASE NOTE: The City is carrying out major renovation work on the garden. During this period, you can only access the belvedere and enjoy the view.

A second phase of work will then take place from September 2026 to June 2027, with a partial closure.

Go down the rampart stairs towards the Saint Bénezet bridge, open to visitors all year round.

After exploring, turn back and return to the main esplanade of the Jardin des Doms, which you will cross to take the Sainte Anne stairs to the Cour de la Manutention, where you will find relaxation areas as well as an art house cinema.

Then cross the gardens to discover, on your left at number 13 rue Banasterie, the Hôtel Madon de Châteaublanc.

Continue your stroll to Place de l'Amirande, where you'll find a magnificent private mansion that houses the 5* Hotel La Mirande, opposite the imposing Tour Saint-Laurent, before heading into Rue Peyrolerie, one of the most typical streets in the historic center.

You are once again on the Place du Palais des Papes, from where you can admire the facade of the Hôtel des Monnaies, access the tour of the Palais des Papes, discover the Basilica of Notre-Dame des Doms and the treasures of the Petit Palais museum, before strolling through the Balance district, which still has some beautiful facades of 15th century residences.

The +: possibility of extending with a walk on the island of Barthelasse, the green lung of Avignon, by taking the free river shuttle at the foot of the Rocher des Doms. Skate park, bike trails, farm sales, numerous leisure activities… And exceptional view of the historic center and its monuments.
