Last Saturday, under the beautiful sun of Grand Avignon, I went to Velleron, a charming Provençal village in Grand Avignon, for a day dedicated to pleasure and indulgence! Between colorful markets, picturesque restaurants and local specialties, I'll take you with me to experience a gourmet day.
Morning relaxation and cultural discovery
I start my day with a little cultural stroll through the charming alleys of village of Velleron. In the historic center, I was able to admire the stone houses and the Notre-Dame de Velleron church which dates from the 13th century. You can also observe magnificent fountains, the Saint-Joseph mill and the old chapel of the gray penitents.
After my little stroll, I stopped at a terrace to enjoy a coffee, but first: a detour to the croquants of Velleron! Velleron Croquants, these are traditional biscuits with almonds from Provence and orange zest, which find their place among the 13 Christmas desserts (note that to buy some you will have to make an appointment at the workshop or wait patiently for the opening of the farmers' market from 18 p.m. to get some).

Once I have my bag of treats in hand, I spot a table in the sun at theArt Brock Cafe, a nice place for a coffee break. La dolce farniente as they say. The owner of the place tells me that they regularly hold events like parties, concerts, exhibitions, I will have to come back one evening!
I take advantage of being in Velleron to walk towards Pernes les Fontaines to admire a very pretty lavender field overlooking the Ventoux. It's the flowering season and the colorful spectacle is a feast for the eyes! There's no doubt about it, I'm definitely in Provence.

Gourmet lunch on the banks of the Sorgue
Noon strikes. Obviously, I'm going to find a nice little spot for lunch. I'd been told about a restaurant that's also an ice cream parlor, with a beautiful terrace and an ideal, refreshing location on the banks of the Sorgue. Off I go to the Piglet's House, which shares its establishment with the Glacier de Velleron. Established in a historic building that once housed a mill, this restaurant offers delicious meats cooked on a spit. For me, it will be a slice of wood-fired lamb accompanied by a generous gratin dauphinois with porcini mushrooms. And to round off the meal: a delicious artisanal sorbet, apricot flavor, to be enjoyed under the shade of the parasol.

Agricultural afternoon
Once full, I resume my exploration of Velleron in the direction of the Velleron sheepfold. The curious and other lovers of local produce like me will have the opportunity to visit this family farm, run by two passionate young women. Quality cheeses, yogurts, brousse cheese, faisselles, pressed cheeses, cream and butter emerge from this farm where animal welfare is a priority. I take the opportunity to ask lots of questions about the production of the products, about the different cheeses and obviously I take the opportunity to get closer to the small goats and sheep on the farm. Farm sales are possible on Saturdays at 16 p.m., otherwise Andréa and Carla are present some evenings at the Velleron farmers' market. Honestly, who could resist?

At the end of the day, from 18 p.m., I finish my gourmet escapade at the now famous Velleron farmers' market. It was my first visit and the place really lived up to my expectations! You should know that this market is an essential reference for all lovers of local products and that it is even considered one of the hundred exceptional markets in France. Just that.
Here, producers are clearly identified and only local farmers have the privilege of selling their products. And there is plenty to choose from: with more than 150 exhibitors, you will find a large part of the Provencal terroir : fruits, vegetables, cheeses, oils, charcuterie, and artisanal specialties according to the seasons. An authentic culinary experience, without frills! Fresh produce, picked the same day, at reasonable prices. I stroll among the stalls, savoring the smells and colors of the freshly harvested produce. The seasonal fruits and vegetables are particularly appetizing. I stock up on juicy tomatoes, crunchy zucchini, and aromatic herbs to extend this gourmet day at home. I also discover local goat cheeses (we can never have enough, right?), dry sausages, homemade jams, and lavender honey, each product with a story and a unique flavor.

I end my day at the market refreshment bar, take a well-deserved refreshment accompanied by the sweet song of the cicadas.
