Route des Vins – itinéraire Azur des Côtes du Rhône
The Côtes du Rhône Tourist Route
In the 14th century, Avignon became the center of Christianity. Along this route, you'll encounter numerous buildings that attest to the escapades of the papal court at that time. The imposing Palais des Papes, the famous Pont Saint Bénézet, the superbly preserved ramparts, and the numerous churches and chapels are true architectural gems. Today, the capital of the Côtes du Rhône region, Avignon comes alive every summer with the rhythm of the drama festival. You'll continue your journey to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the sovereign pontiffs had their summer residence built, or to Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne, where Frédéric Mistral revived Provençal.
