LE TOTEM offers a regular program of shows for young audiences and families throughout the year.
LE TOTEM offers a regular program of shows for young audiences and families throughout the year.
Created in 1983 to provide a venue dedicated to young audiences at the Avignon Off Festival, the Totem, which was previously called the children's theatre house, gradually structured and developed to become a theatre with permanent activity.
Today, Totem is an association that offers a range of activities dedicated to children and young people from a very young age and to families with a program of shows, the implementation of artistic and cultural education activities in conjunction with partners in the areas of intervention (Avignon, Grand Avignon and department of Vaucluse), support for creation through hosting companies in residence and production assistance, coordination of the Festo Pitcho festival and the organization of a reference program within the framework of the Festival Off d'Avignon.
The Totem is a conventioned stage for Art, Childhood, and Youth whose role is structuring in the cultural and artistic landscape of young audiences. Its place in supporting creation and the strong visibility it offers to companies programmed as part of the Festival Off d'Avignon among professionals in the sector gives the Totem an important role in the dissemination of works dedicated to young audiences at the national and international level.
Currently, creation dedicated to childhood and youth is one of the richest and most abundant in the diversity of proposals and approaches imagined to bring a young individual into contact with the rest of the world.
The multiplicity and blend of aesthetics, the audacity and inventiveness of the artists who make up the current landscape, make creation for young people an art that has managed to escape the minor art in which it was confined to earn its letters of nobility. Artists who address children and young people know how to resonate with our society. Their artistic gesture provides a symbolic, philosophical and political echo that is absolutely necessary for our world.
It is a space of freedom to defend and promote so that the words of artists continue to be sources of reflection, pleasure, sharing and astonishment.
It is in this space of freedom that the Totem fully inscribes its project.
