The birth of Velleron

In the XNUMXth century, a castle was erected on a hilltop overlooking the agricultural plain, replacing an ancient Roman oppidum (fortified settlement). During the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, a village gradually formed at the foot of the fortress, protected by surrounding ramparts. And so, Velleron was born!

The two castles

Let's begin our historical tour with two symbols of Velleron. In the 17th century, the village was divided between the Crillon and Cambis families, each building their own castle.

Crillon Castle

With its castle‑like look that seems lifted straight from a film set, the building now serves as the Town Hall. The Château de Crillon, built in the XNUMXth century on the foundations of the original fortress, still shows off its impressive defensive towers and its stark but irresistible façade. One glance, and you’re instantly swept back into another time.

Cambis Castle

Discover the Château de Cambis, a magnificent example of Renaissance architecture built in the 17th century. Its purpose was not military, but rather a celebration of the lifestyle of the lords of Cambis. While the former stables have been converted into residences, the château itself has become a venue for numerous cultural events.

Saint-Michel church

Let’s keep exploring Velleron’s heritage with the Church of Saint‑Michel, a sacred site listed as a historical monument. This church alone captures an entire chapter of the village’s past. Originally Romanesque, it was reworked over the centuries, first during the Gothic period, then again up until the XNUMXth century. Seven chapels, a polygonal bell tower, a XNUMXth‑century vaulted nave, an XNUMXth‑century classical façade… here, every stone has a story to tell.

The Sorgue

The Sorgue emerges from the mysterious Fontaine-de-Vaucluse chasm, the 5th largest resurgence in the world. Divided into several branches that water the plain, it then rejoins before flowing into the Ouvèze.

This river, classified as first category due to the quality of its waters and their constant temperature of 13°C, will amaze you with its exceptional clarity of water.

We recommend following the course of this river, to enjoy its green banks and its fish-filled waters, which make it a preserved space to explore carefully.

Keep your eyes open!

It nests on the riverbanks and keeps a close eye on the water, diving in to catch fish and swallowing them whole. Sadly, pollution has put this beautiful species under threat.

Fishing

The rivers around Velleron include a designated no‑kill zone as well as an area specially reserved for young fisherman (under 15years old). Trout fishing is the star activity here, but many other species also thrive in these waters.

To find out about the specific regulations for the different areas as well as the fishing opening periods, it is best to contact the Vaucluse fishing federation.

Various cyprinids such as minnows, chub, dace, etc., are present. You might also be lucky enough to spot beavers, otters, and other kingfishers around a bend.
