This is at Vaucluse fountain that the Sorgue River originates. The chasm, located 80 meters above sea level, remains a mystery to this day, the subject of numerous scientific studies. Shaped by humans, the Sorgue's hydrographic network functions "in reverse": it originates from a single branch before subsequently dividing.

An iconic historical and geographical site, it has inspired many poets, including Petrarch in the 14th century, and more recently René Char. The low and constant temperature of the Sorgue Combined with a consistently steady flow, this river benefits from excellent oxygenation. These ideal conditions allow it to support a highly diverse ecosystem. It has been designated a Natura 2000 site along its entire length.
