Voyage au cœur du fantastique décadent
Bibliothèque Ceccano 2 bis rue Laboureur 84000 Avignon
The conference will be keen to explore this moment when fantastic literature (which we will try to define) reinvents itself and perverts itself in vapors of absinthe, neuroses and exquisite corpses.
You will enter the dark lodgings of bachelors from a very misogynistic era (1880-1900), where all refinements were permitted to do without women and where the sweet ghosts of early 19th-century romantic literature gave way to bodies that were appreciated like stale dishes. You will also explore the moral limits of an era where everything was (almost) permitted thanks to the progress of science, notably the first discoveries of the unconscious. Sensitive souls, abstain!
You will travel through excerpts from texts by Jean Lorrain, Oscar Wilde, Maupassant, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Jean Richepin, Marcel Schwob, Rachilde, etc.
Professor of literature at the University of Le Mans, specializing in imaginary literature (fantasy literature, literary decadence, children's literature), Nathalie Prince likes to combine her work as a researcher (Fantastic Literature, Armand Colin, 2025; Children's Literature, Armand Colin, 2021) and her work as an author (Saint-Exupéry. The Wind in the Heart, Calype, 2024; A Burial and Four Seasons, Flammarion, 2021 or Big Words, Big Remedies, Bel&Bien, 2024).
Free access.
