Known for its major religious works, the collections of the Pierre-de-Luxembourg Museum also include other pictorial genres, notably landscapes, many of which depict the city on the Rhône. A medieval town linked to the Rhône, the papacy, and the kings of France, sheltered by Mont Andaon and the Mourgues hill, Villeneuve developed from the 17th century onwards around the Abbey of Saint-André. Its exceptional heritage, both secular (Fort Saint-André and the Philippe-le-Bel Tower) and religious (in addition to the abbey, the Charterhouse, the Collegiate Church, and the Chapel of the Grey Penitents), has inspired many artists, first and foremost Enguerrand Quarton, whose magnificent altarpiece of the Coronation of the Virgin already evokes elements of Villeneuve. From the 15th century to the 20th century, this exhibition invites you on a journey through time in the footsteps of the landscapes of Villeneuve, from William Marlow to Joseph Meissonnier, via Raoul Baligant and the Provençal masters.
