Visite guidée de l'exposition OTHONIEL COSMOS ou les Fantômes de l'Amour – Palais
Palais des Papes Palais des Papes – place du Palais des Papes 84000 Avignon
Explore the works housed in the Palais des Papes, the heart of the constellation. Fifteen rooms, a sonnet of 15 works by Othoniel, including 133 new sculptures created for this unique venue!
The Palais des Papes is the nerve center of the constellation. Othoniel displays a masterful sonnet of 15 works across 133 rooms of the palace, including 106 new sculptures, created especially for the Palais des Papes, to reflect the monumentality and history of this unique place.
Suspended abstract sculptures, like large necklaces, meet the figures of the zodiac, giant astrolabes invade the great chapel and the cloister. Beneath the chapels' frescoes, large sculptures of glass bricks and mirrors invite the visitor to meditate on lost loves...
About the exhibition:
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of its designation as European Capital of Culture and the 30th anniversary of its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Avignon has entrusted Jean-Michel Othoniel with the task of investing in its emblematic sites and museums. From June 28, 2025 to January 4, 2026, the artist is displaying a gigantic constellation of 10 works in 240 locations in the city of the Popes, including 160 never before seen in France and created especially for this exhibition. Love is the central theme. The artist invests
the Palais des Papes, the Place du Palais, the Pont Saint Bénezet, the Petit Palais, the Calvet, Requien, and Lapidaire museums, the Bains Pommer, the Lambert Collection, and the Sainte Claire chapel. This is one of the first times in the world where a city has offered a single artist the opportunity to exhibit in all its museums. The visitor is invited to travel from one place to another, in a sort of poetic pilgrimage. The works presented combine different media: sculpture and painting, bricks and glass beads, astrolabes and fountains, gold and glass. The exhibition is structured around passionate love, drawing inspiration from the Canzoniere, a collection of love sonnets written in the 14th century by Francesco Petrarca, dedicated to
Laure.
All audiences, children from 8 years old
Departure of the tour: At the bottom of the wooden staircase to the right of the main entrance – Place du Palais des Papes
Duration of the visit: 2 hours
