Painted by the French artist Enguerrand Quarton between 1453 and 1454, a major artist whose essential work is held in the Louvre Museum, the splendid altarpiece of the Coronation of the Virgin was commissioned by the monks of the Charterhouse of Villeneuve lez Avignon to adorn the funerary chapel of Pope Innocent VI.
