Visite commentée de l'exposition «Le Grand Fleuve»
La Chartreuse, 58 rue de la République 30400 Villeneuve-lez-Avignon
Originally from French Guiana, Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc has been developing a body of work for twenty years that explores the legacies of colonialism, diasporic memories, creolization and living archives.
At the Charterhouse of Villeneuve lez AvignonMathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc presents Le Grand Fleuve, an exhibition where sound becomes living matter.
In the laundry room (a place of care and forced confinement), the eye is first drawn to the space itself. The walls, the volumes, the burnt-out prison door, still standing, striking. The architecture already bears layers of history, physical traces, visible, scarred.
This is where Abonnenc's work begins. For over twenty years, the artist has explored the legacies of colonialism, diasporic memories, and forms of creolization. Here, he extends this research through a unique sonic immersion, enriched by recordings made within the very heart of the site: voices, resonances, breaths, acoustic traces. With the singer Bruno Bonhoure, he records fragments in the laundry room and other spaces within the Charterhouse, such as the chapter house, transforming the place into a veritable sounding board, an amplifier.
