Avignon Tourism offers families the opportunity to discover the richness of medieval art through its forms, colours and imaginary creatures.
From 6 years.
Explore sculpture, painting, and stained glass to understand how medieval artists brought the sacred, the wondrous, and the everyday to life. Extend this immersive experience with a workshop where each child creates their own chimera.
Discovery trail:
1. Medieval sculptures
Observation of capitals, gargoyles and symbolic figures. Discovery of the sculptor's gestures, tools, materials and hidden messages in the forms.
2. The secrets of painting
Exploring medieval colours: natural pigments, binders, fresco techniques. Analyzing images to understand how artists told stories without words.
3. The magic of stained glass
Contemplating the interplay of light. Explanation of the role of stained glass in architecture and the manufacturing of colored glass.
4. Fantastic creatures
Identifying dragons, griffins, mermaids, winged lions and other hybrid beings that populate medieval settings. Discussion of their symbolism, their protective or moral function, and their place in the collective imagination.
Workshop: "Create your own chimera"
Process
• Presentation of some models of medieval chimeras.
• Choice of elements: wings, tails, claws, beaks, horns, scales…
• Clay modeling.
Educational goals
• Understanding the creative freedom of medieval artists.
• Develop observation, imagination and fine motor skills.
• To encourage personal expression within an artistic framework.
• To create a concrete link between heritage and contemporary creation.
Duration: about 2 hours.
The workshop visit is not suitable for children under 6 years old.
