Si tu veux que je vive, Lucie et Alfred Dreyfus
Théâtre Benoit XII 12 rue des Teinturiers 84000 Avignon
This is Alfred Dreyfus's injunction to Lucie, his wife, at the moment when, in detention, he was losing his grip on reality.
Wrongfully accused of treason, condemned and deported to Devil's Island, isolated, he survives the extreme conditions inflicted upon him thanks to the unwavering letters of support from the intrepid young woman. The play recounts the Dreyfus Affair through the correspondence between Alfred and Lucie Dreyfus, and the writings of journalist Séverine, a leading figure in committed journalism, who very early on mobilized public opinion and denounced the injustice.
Without Lucie, a largely forgotten figure in history, Alfred Dreyfus would have perished, never been exonerated, and never become the courageous icon who embodied the values of the Republic. As for Séverine, a prominent figure of her time, she connects with the audience to tell us "the unbelievable story of Alfred and Lucie Dreyfus."
