Richard III
Théâtre Benoit XII 12 rue des Teinturiers 84000 Avignon
A maelstrom of poetry and fury, a titanic fresco, a concentrate of apocalypse which recalls the actions of all extremists thirsty for power.
Richard III, unhappy and ugly, consumed by ambition to be king, allowed his reigning brother, King Edward IV, to die and had his successor, George, Duke of Clarence, assassinated. He died in 1485 at the age of 32 at the Battle of Bosworth Field, becoming the last English king to die in battle ("A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!"). His death ended the Plantagenet hegemony, which had ruled England for 300 years, and opened the door to the Tudor dynasty.
