Prométhée
Opéra Grand Avignon place de l'Horloge 84000 Avignon
Following a premiere in December 2025 that was acclaimed by the press and the public, Prometheus returns for the 2026-2027 season. This success has confirmed the power of this work where myth, music and dance meet in a rare intensity.
With Prometheus, Martin Harriague continues his exploration of transgressive figures who defy the gods and norms. Following his creation inspired by Donald J. Trump, he summons the one who dared to steal fire from the gods to give it to humankind, an act of rebellion and generosity, punished by eternal suffering. Beyond the ancient tale, this play questions what it means to "steal fire" today: in a world where humans arrogate to themselves the power to control and destroy, Prometheus does not steal the flame to annihilate, but to offer humankind the very source of knowledge, life, and… love.
At the heart of the creation is Ludwig van Beethoven's The Creatures of Prometheus, the composer's only ballet. Fabien Cali, in residence with the Orchestra, enriches Beethoven's score with a contemporary dimension, extending the dialogue between music and movement, between heritage and invention.
For Martin Harriague, the intimate relationship between movement and sound is a true signature: the dance doesn't follow the music, it is music. The bodies translate the notes and reveal what we hear. The choreography blends powerful ensembles, sensitive duets, and virtuoso solos. Here we find that explosive and precise style that defines the choreographer's unique voice.
Thus, Prometheus establishes itself as a total work, musical, choreographic and mythical, whose revival prolongs the momentum of an already brilliant success.
