Peut-on vraiment rester Seul sur Mars ?

Université d'Avignon 74 rue Louis Pasteur 84000 Avignon
Conference / Debate / Meeting
As part of the joint conferences of Avignon University and the Café des Sciences, Roland Lehoucq, astrophysicist at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), presents.
The film The Martian (R. Scott, 2015) shows us how the protagonist, Mark Watney, attempts to survive on Mars using his ingenuity and scientific knowledge. With NASA announcing a crewed mission to Mars in the coming decades, it's interesting to consider the question of how a group of human explorers could survive in the hostile conditions that prevail on the surface of the Red Planet. We also can't help but wonder if what the film depicts is realistic. Could a Martian dust storm cause such widespread damage? How would water be produced on Mars? Could potatoes be grown there? What is the surface of Mars really like? Together, let's try to answer the question, "Can we survive alone on Mars?"

Roland Lehoucq is an astrophysicist at the CEA in Saclay. Author of numerous popular science books such as La science fait son cinéma and Faire des sciences avec Star Wars, he has presided over the Les Utopiales international science fiction festival in Nantes since 2012.
