From churches that survived the Revolution to private mansions, from canals to the vicinity of the Palace of the Popes, this mapped route takes you through the streets of the inner city to discover restored buildings and address the theme of heritage in danger.
Avignon boasts an exceptional heritage that attracts more than two million visitors each year. Its UNESCO perimeter, classified in 1995, includes the Palace of the Popes, the Notre Dame des Doms basilica-metropolis, the ramparts and the Saint Bénezet Bridge.
But the city center also houses a multitude of buildings, erected at different times, which are listed and protected. While many buildings have been preserved and restored since the 19th century, many others have disappeared over time and as a result of historical events.
Today, Avignon, like many other French cities, faces a significant challenge: preserving and restoring its exceptional built heritage, as well as its natural heritage, and saving monuments at risk of collapse. France still has over 67000 unlisted or endangered monuments.
