Le Vili

Opéra Grand Avignon place de l'Horloge 84000 Avignon

Opera

A divided world. Masculine and feminine. Life and death. Countryside and city. In Le Villi, everything stems from a fracture.

The village's pristine purity is countered by the allure of the city, a place of oblivion and perdition. Roberto leaves, Anna stays. From betrayal arises death, and with it, the Villi. Nature itself is transformed: welcoming at first, it becomes a haunted forest, a nocturnal realm where the spirits' justice is carried out.
The Villi, a collection of multiple female figures, are both nymphs and avengers, akin to the ancient Erinyes: forces of persecution as well as powers of appeasement. Within this dense and archaic Central European imaginary, Puccini unfolds a limpid style, imbued with youthful fervor.

Stefano Poda places these tensions at the heart of his staging. His set design creates a dialogue between man and woman, nature and technology, the Apollonian and the Dionysian. Moreover, dance becomes the driving force of the drama: it propels the bodies to a final, dizzying climax, poised between damnation and possible redemption. More than a fantastical tale, Le Villi becomes a journey through femininity, from innocence to metamorphosis. A tragedy of betrayed love where dance, inexorable, seals fate.
