Italians and Avignon…such a long history. In the 14th century, the Pope settled in Avignon, bringing with him many Italian families.
Finally, at the very beginning of the 20th century, fleeing poverty, many Italians arrived in the south to find work. They often came on foot and without shoes, crossing the Alps. They had to make their mark and work hard, most often on the land.
The Carmes district was once known as the "Italian Quarter." Indeed, for a long time, the district welcomed Italians coming to settle in Avignon.
The first Italian to settle in Avignon in May 1892 was André Di Cito, whose statue stands in the Jardin des Carmes. Upon his death in 1934, he witnessed the birth of "Little Italy."
