Exposition «Songs from the distorted south»
La Chartreuse, 58 rue de la République 30400 Villeneuve-lez-Avignon
Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc explores the legacies of colonialism. The exhibition questions the memory of Afro-diasporic worlds, the silences of colonial history, and the sea as a place of disappearance, transmission, and resistance.
Originally from French Guiana, artist Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc has spent the last twenty years exploring the legacies of colonialism, diasporic memories, creolization, and living archives. Currently collaborating with choreographer and dancer Betty Tchomanga and drawing inspiration from Derek Walcott's poem "The Sea is History," the exhibition examines the memory of Afro-diasporic worlds, the silences of colonial history, and the sea as a place of disappearance, transmission, and resistance.
