Conférence «D’or et d’ivoire : une Vierge gothique, lumière du Moyen Âge»

Musée Pierre-de-Luxembourg, 3 rue de la République 30400 Villeneuve-lez-Avignon

Conference / Debate / Meeting

Lecture on the Gothic Virgin and Child in the museum, carved from an elephant tusk, and on ivory work in the Middle Ages, by Brigitte Serre-Bouret, honorary chief curator of heritage.

At the Pierre de Luxembourg Museum, a magnificent Virgin and Child, dating from the Gothic period, was carved from an elephant tusk, embellished with gold and polychromy. The purity and beauty of ivory have always fascinated humankind. From prehistoric times, people have sculpted, engraved, and chiseled this noble material to reflect their history, customs, and beliefs.
This conference offers a journey to the origins of this exceptional material: a symbol of luxury for ancient civilizations, an instrument of influence for Christian art, and an essential witness to medieval heritage.
Doctor of Art History and Archaeology, Honorary Chief Curator, Brigitte Serre-Bouret now puts her museum management experience at the service of research and higher education, exploring her preferred fields with rigor and passion.
