Ciné-concert Le dernier des hommes de Murnau

Opéra Grand Avignon place de l'Horloge 84000 Avignon

Concert, Film Screening

In a grand luxury hotel in Berlin, an old doorman, proud of his uniform, sees his life turned upside down when he is brutally demoted to the position of toilet attendant because of his age and physical weakness.

Humiliated, he tries to hide his social downfall from his neighbors by continuing to wear his uniform in secret.

The Last Laugh marked a major breakthrough in cinema thanks to Karl Freund's innovative "freewheeling camera," which offered unprecedented visual mobility. Murnau used these movements to illustrate the old doorman's fall, intensely portrayed by Emil Jannings. Without intertitles and featuring a forced happy ending, the film was a success and propelled both Jannings and Murnau to Hollywood.

Film concert presented as part of the 15th edition of the Rencontres du Sud.
