Carmen
Confluence spectacles 2, place de l'Europe 84000 Avignon
The Barcelona Flamenco Ballet (BFB) addresses the omnipresent myth of Carmen in its new project. This new reconstruction of Bizet's work brings new, previously unknown elements to flamenco.
It goes beyond the traditional conception in which it has historically been categorized and adapts it to the reality of today's contemporary society. The values for which Carmen is today a woman of our time and the adaptation of flamenco music and ballet with the distinctive stamp that characterizes David Gutierrez, place the work in a new paradigm of universal myth and flamenco of the 21st century.
Despite the passage of time, Carmen maintains its message of freedom and courage in the face of an unequal world where women continue to fight for their rights. Carmen is the prototype of a woman who faces a hostile and violent male world that she does not survive, but leaves her example for posterity.
Carmen is pain, passion, and a cry for freedom—feelings that flamenco art masterfully represents in its wildest and most primitive form. BFB tells the story written by Prosper Mérimée, which tells the love story between Carmen, the gypsy, and Escamillo, the bullfighter. Here too, flamenco language is the best vehicle for artistic expression to convey emotions and the perfect engine to convey the passion of the protagonists.
Mérimée's characters, Bizet's music, and BFB's flamenco blend in a show open to the public today. Lovers of opera, flamenco, dance, music, theater, and the performing arts in general will discover a new aesthetic benchmark in this Carmen, where the blend of cultures and sensibilities will open the doors to 21st-century art.
With Carmen, the Ballet Flamenco de Barcelona wants to pay tribute to Prosper Mérimée and his relationship with Spain, and particularly with Barcelona. He knew the city, spoke Catalan, and even the Caló language of the gypsies. For its ties to Barcelona, for its love of diversity and the blending of cultures, BFB owes a great deal to the brilliant author Prosper Mérimée.
