Camus : la chute
Théâtre du Balcon 38, rue Guillaume Puy 84000 Avignon
A psychoanalytic and theatrical journey around Camus's The Fall.
This question runs through a narrative spanning five days. In a seedy Amsterdam bar, the narrator, Jean-Baptiste Clamence, confesses his story to a mute interlocutor. In Paris, where he practices the enigmatic profession of "judge-penitent," he didn't even deign to save a woman about to throw herself into the Seine. Only at the end of the story does the reader discover the true meaning of his role: to accuse himself, to paint the darkest portrait of himself.
For here, the narrator does not simply recount his life to his listener: he exposes his actions, his cowardice, and his failings. He draws us all in as witnesses, shakes our certainties, and tears away our masks.
