Awen · The Sacred Veil
Grande Chapelle du Palais des Papes place du Palais 84000 Avignon
Awen · The Sacred Veil, an original creation by Martin Harriague, choreographer and director of the Paris Opera Ballet Grand Avignon, brings together for the first time its dancers and the Opera Chorus, conducted by Alan Woodbridge.
Presented in the Great Chapel of the Palace of the Popes, this work gives form to The Sacred Veil by Eric Whitacre, an internationally renowned composer and Grammy Award winner.
The musical work, written for piano, cello, and choir, is inspired by the personal story of Julie, who died of cancer, and her partner Anthony Silvestri, a librettist and longtime friend of Whitacre. The music explores the intensity of their bond, their shared love, and the hardships they endured.
Martin Harriague's choreography transforms the body into a musical instrument: movement doesn't simply accompany the music, it extends it and makes it visible. The dancers embody the music, convey the emotion, and give form to this universal story of connection, transformation, and resilience. The finesse and precision of the Choir engage in a subtle dialogue with the dancers' bodies, blending intensity and delicacy.
The Great Chapel of the Palace of the Popes, a place steeped in history and spirituality, amplifies the meditative and sensory dimension of the piece. AWEN · The Sacred Veil thus offers the audience an intense moment where dance and voice converse in a unique and profoundly human space.
