A 2-day walking adventure through the vineyards between Sauveterre and Rochefort du Gard. Two days of hilly walking through villages offering plenty of opportunities for eating and relaxing. The itinerary is easily adaptable.
We pack a light backpack, knowing we'll have to fill it up along the way. Head to Sauveterre, 10km north of Avignon, where we begin by climbing the vineyard-studded hills above the village. We stop at La Chèvrerie d'Emilie, then at Domaine Castel Oualou a few meters further on, with the promise of a royal picnic.
But before that, it's a climb to reach the ridges of Saint-Geniès and the Gargantua Cave. We admire the surroundings, from the Rhône to the Ventoux and the medieval castles of St-Laurent-des-Arbres and St-Victor-la-Coste. The afternoon ends under the plane trees of St-Victor-la-Coste with a tasting of wonderful wines from the AOC Lirac.
The next day, the adventure goes underground. We meet up with our guide Adrien for a morning of caving to discover another world, this one mineral. The end of the day brings a welcome coolness, as we leave the vineyard for forest trails.
Around a bend, the horizon opens up and we discover Notre-Dame-de-Grâce perched on its hillside overlooking the entire Rhône Valley. The place invites contemplation. We admire the village of Rochefort-du-Gard below. Dinner awaits us there; it's time to go back down.
